Scam Alert
– Please Be Aware. We recently went through a very distressing experience and want to share it as a warning. Last Friday, we received a call from what appeared to be the official City Police Department number. The caller claimed we had failed to respond to an affidavit in our name and then transferred us to people claiming to be from the FBI and DEA. They said multiple accounts had been opened under my name and were linked to illegal activities. They made it seem like a case of identity theft and provided enough (seemingly legitimate) details to sound convincing. They kept me on the call the entire time, did not allow me to speak to anyone else, and repeatedly threatened that I could be jailed for life if we didn’t comply. Eventually, they asked us to withdraw cash and hand it over to a so-called “secret agent” to secure our accounts. That raised red flags. My husband immediately called the Police Department, who confirmed this was a scam—they would never call about an affidavit; they would show up in person if needed. The scammers used real names and badge numbers of actual officers and agents, which added to the deception. We later confirmed with the FBI that while the agent’s name was real, it was being misused in an ongoing scam. It was an incredibly stressful three hours. Please stay alert and cautious—these scams are sophisticated and terrifyingly convincing.
- i’m sorry this happened to you. This is common knowledge - any combination of: .
(1) “i’m from govt agency X”
+ (2) “elevated urgency/speed of action”
+ (3) “banking transaction needed” = it’s a classic formula for a scam.
Аt this point in this world, unfortunately common sense should dictate this combination of factors requires a firm “click” hangulp
- Scammers had my 90-year-old mother in tears several years ago. They said they were from the IRS, and she was going to jail unless she went to several stores and bought thousands of dollars in gift cards. She was so traumatized that she was willing to do what they asked. Thankfully, she was no longer driving and could not go to the stores. She didn't even believe me when I told her it was a scam, so I had her call her accountant to verify that the IRS does not take gift cards
- Whenever I see a call I don’t recognize I tell the person" hello Riviera resorts home of the finest resorts on the Colorado river юJonathan speaking may help you", and guess what no one ever wants to talk to me
